The Australian almond industry can anticipate a notably improved year ahead, attributed to enhanced margins resulting from reduced input costs, increased accessibility, and affordability of water, favorable climatic conditions, and rising export prices.
The 2024 Australian almond harvest is currently underway, signaling prospects for a robust recovery following a challenging production year in 2023. It is estimated to yield 164,000 metric tons kernel weight equivalent this year, marking a significant 59% increase from the previous year. Australian almond marketers are poised to surpass last year’s record sales volume, with one month remaining in the 2023-24 selling season.
The Almond Board of Australia has concluded its assessment of January shipment and domestic figures, revealing a 2.6% increase in volumes compared to the same period last year. These numbers have exceeded industry expectations, underscoring the significance of cultivating a diversified export network. However, demand remains subdued due to low global pricing and high production costs, resulting in one of the toughest seasons for grower returns.
As the harvest for the new season gains momentum, export activity is expected to soar, particularly in traditional inshell markets like India and China. Ongoing dry conditions have created favorable circumstances for producing high-quality inshell almonds.
